Modeling aircraft

by jfrench on Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:41 pm

Hi,

In the FSX FAQs, in response to the question regarding adding virtual cockpits, the answer says that if you wish to do this you need to know how to design aircraft models.

Where is a good place to start to learn the fundamentals of doing this? I really don't feel up to designing a complete aircraft but I would like to make some very minor modifications. Or even know if it's possible.

Well there is a very useful tutorial here:

https://www.simviation.com/gryphon/tutorials/gMax_00.htm

But be advised, modeling an aircraft is not easy. Even a simple model will take a very long time to create. It is possible to modify .mdl (model files) which are located in the model folder. You might be able to add a virtual cockpit. In order to do that you need a lot knowlegde of GMAX modeling and experience. So I wouldn't recommand that...and most aircraft developers do not allow it too.

Hi,

Per your reply: I don't believe I have any unrealistic expectations regarding model creation but it would be interesting to learn what is involved. You say that it is possible to modify a .mdl file; I would appreciate any information as to how I could even look inside one. I have Gmax installed and registered but can't figure out how to use it examine a .mdl file.

I think I'm on a wild goose chase and would like to rest for a while.

Specifically: How can I look inside a .mdl file (even if I couldn't modify it)? What programs create .mdl files?

Thanks.

Microsoft's SDK tools for FS2004 contains a MakeMDL program, which can be used as GMAX plugin.

Unfortunally, the FS2004 page with developer info on the microsoft.com website has been deactivated.

You might consider to ask your questions regarding .mdl files on the Flight Simulator Development forum on FS2004.com:

A lot guys with more technical knowlegde of GMAX are there, they might know more.
