The Boeing 737 is a popular medium-range, narrowbody commercial passenger jet aircraft. The 737-200 is an extended version of the initial version, the Boeing 737-100 which is the smallest of all 737 variants. Only 30 737-100s were ordered and delivered, none of them are in service or in airworthy condition anymore. Despite the poor fuel efficiency and high noise emissions of the Pratt & Whitney JT8D low-bypass ratio turbofan engines, many 737-200s are still in service of low cost airlines and in developing countries.
Aerosim is a Japanese developer of various MS Flight Simulator products. Many classic aircraft are available in special packages. The Boeing 737-200Adv is part of the Classic Liners Vol. 1 package. Besides the 737-200Adv, the package contains more classic aircraft: Boeing 747-100, 747-200B, 747-200C, 747-200F, 747-300, 727-100 and 727-200. Also, scenery
of the old Osaka International Airport is included in this package.
The package contains four liveries for the Boeing 737-200Adv:
Aloha Airlines, Piedomont Airlines, Canadian Airlines and Royal Brunei Airlines. The liveries are not the highest quality, but it's still nice. Unfortunally, there are not many 3th party liveries available on websites like AVSIM. This might be due to the small number of people who own Aerosim aircraft or maybe because there are too many good freeware alternatives.
Like many aircraft developed by Aerosim, the virtual cockpit is quite simple. Not all buttons are clickable, 2d textures are used instead. On the other hand, a simple virtual cockpit is good news for your framerate. And if your computer is very slow, you can use the wingview model, which is even better for your framerate. The flight dynamics are well balanced and the aircraft is quite easy to fly too. All usual animations are present and everything works as it should. So, there really isn't much more to say about this aicraft, it looks good, it flies good, but it would be nice if more liveries were available.
NOTE FOR FSX USERS: This aircraft is fully compatible with FSX (only the smoke effects are not). Please follow the instructions below if you want to use this aircraft in FSX:
1. First, you need to run the orginal installer. Even if you have this aircraft allready installed in FS2004, it is best to run the installer again. During the installation, choose a different folder to install. For example, install the package in a folder that does not exist (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FSX). The reason for doing this is that both FS2004 users who allready have this aircraft installed and new users that only want to install this aircraft in FSX can use the same set of instructions.
2. After the installation, you have the aircraft installed in the new folder. In our example, that would be here: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FSX\
In that folder you should have at least 5 sub-folders: Aircraft, Effects, Fonts, Gauges and Texture. If you see a file called "Handbook.pdf", you can move it to any location you want, it is not important for the installation in FSX.
3. Inside the folder called "Aircraft", there is another folder called "AS_B737200ADV_CL". Move or copy this folder to the "Airplanes" folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\ ).
4. Move or copy the contents of the "Effects" folder to the main effects folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Effects\ ).
5. Move or copy the contents of the "Fonts" folder to the fonts folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Fonts\ ).
6. Move or copy the contents of the "Gauges" folder to the gauges folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Gauges\ ).
7. Move or copy the contents of the "Texture" folder to the main texture folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Texture\
Next time when you start FSX, the aircraft should be visible in the aircraft selection list and work fine. If you like to see a thumbnail image for each livery, you need to make a screenshot of each livery of the aircraft and resize it to 256x128 pixels (use an image editor like photoshop, paintshop or whatever you prefer). Make sure the image format is JPG and name each of them "thumbnail.jpg". Then copy the image to each texture folder inside the aircraft folder(e.g. \AS_B737200ADV_CL\TEXTURE\ ).
If you wish, you can also use this method for the other aircraft in the package.
The smoke effect does not work in FSX (It actually will, but the smoke will not appear at the right location behind the aircraft). |
