DM Flight Sim Vickers VC10
FREEWARE
The Vickers VC10 is a classic medium to long-range, narrow body commercial passenger jet aircraft built by the British company Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd. The prototype first flew on June 29, 1962. Based on BOAC specifications, the VC10 was designed to operate on long distance routes and capable of hot and high operations from African airports. There are basically two versions of the VC10: the 109-151 seat Standard version and the 139-174 seat Super version. Despite it's sophisticated design, the VC10 never became a commercial success due to bad timing of it's debut and high operating costs. Only 54 airframes were build when the production of the VC10 ceased in 1970. After years of service with various airlines, a large number of VC10s were bought by the RAF and converted to air to air refueling aircraft. Many of them are still in service.

DM Flight Sim is developer of freeware classic British jet airliners. Their VC10 is a detailed model and resembles it's realworld counterpart very well. All usual animations are present and seem to be accurate. Some of the special animations are opening passenger doors with air strairs and intake covers on all four engines when those are off. Both the civil and military versions are modeled including various liveries. The panel looks realistic, although the text on it is sometimes hard to read. One of the sub-panels is a dynamic checklist for takeoff, climb and approach. The flight dynamics are excellent. The control inputs are a bit slow, just like it should be on an old aircraft like the VC10. Engine smoke apprears automatically when the engines are at full power.

NOTE FOR FSX USERS: This aircraft is fully compatible with FSX. However, the smoke effect does not work in FSX (It actually will, but the smoke will not appear at the right location behind the aircraft), so it is better to disable it if you're going to use this aircraft in FSX. Follow the instruction below if you want to fly this aircraft in FSX:

1. Download the desired parts of the package from the DM Flight Sim website and unzip them in a temp. folder.

2. Now go to the temp. folder and copy the contents of the Aircraft folder to the FSX aircraft folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\ ).

3. This step is only valid if you've downloaded one of the panels. Copy the contents of the Effects folder to the FSX effects folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Effects\ ).

4. Now go to the FSX aircraft folder
(e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\ ) and open the aircraft.cfg files of each aircraft model with notepad. (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\VC10 C1K\aircraft.cfg ) Find these lines:

[SMOKESYSTEM]
Smoke.0=2.50, -52.10, -9.60, DM_VC10_SMOKE_R
Smoke.1=2.50, -52.10, -15.10, DM_VC10_SMOKE_R
Smoke.2=2.50, -52.10, 9.60, DM_VC10_SMOKE_L
Smoke.3=2.50, -52.10, 15.10, DM_VC10_SMOKE_L
//smoke.4=0,-36,-73, fx_contrail_320
//smoke.5=0,-36, 73, fx_contrail_320

change them to:

[SMOKESYSTEM]
//Smoke.0=2.50, -52.10, -9.60, DM_VC10_SMOKE_R
//Smoke.1=2.50, -52.10, -15.10, DM_VC10_SMOKE_R
//Smoke.2=2.50, -52.10, 9.60, DM_VC10_SMOKE_L
//Smoke.3=2.50, -52.10, 15.10, DM_VC10_SMOKE_L
//smoke.4=0,-36,-73, fx_contrail_320
//smoke.5=0,-36, 73, fx_contrail_320

and then save the file. Do the same for the other aircraft models. Now the smoke effect is disabled. Since it doesn't appear right, it's better to disable it.

Next time when you start FSX, the aircraft should be visible in the aircraft selection list and work fine. If you like to see a thumbnail image for each livery, you need to make a screenshot of each livery of the aircraft and resize it to 256x128 pixels (use an image editor like photoshop, paintshop or whatever you prefer). Make sure the image format is JPG and name each of them "thumbnail.jpg". Then copy the image to each texture folder inside the aircraft folder (e.g. \VC10 C1K\texture.101 Sqd 2006\ ).
