Overland MD-11

review

Simmer's sky is a label of the Japanese company Overland Co.,Ltd. Along with a few other products, they sell the Fly into the sky! package, which contains many Airbus and Boeing aircraft. This package also contains the McDonnell Douglas MD-11. However, this aircraft was released earlier as freeware and is still available for free.

Overland's MD-11 model is a highly detailed representation of the real MD-11. The payware Fly into the sky! package contains the General Electric and Pratt & Whitney models and a Finnair livery. The freeware package contains only the Pratt & Whitney model and the Simmer's sky house livery. The 2d panel is frame rate friendly, but doesn't have a FMC. For full IFR flights, you need to use the default Carmin GPS unit. ILS Approaches are no problem, just enter the course/ILS frequency and use the APPR/LAND button.

The virtual cockpit is a bit simple, only the most important systems are modeled. But it looks nice and is frame rate friendly too. There is also a wingview model for even better frame rate. The flight dynamics are quite good and the landing gear is very detailed and behaves realistic.

    notes

Simmer's sky released an update for FSX on March 28, 2008. Click the product location link for the url.

The freeware version however is not updated for FSX yet, but is compatible with FSX. However, the animation of the main landing gear is not right. Because a few original FS2004 gauges are used by this aircraft, FS2004 must be installed on your computer. If you don't have FS2004, it's best to wait for a FSX patch or FSX version of this aircraft. Please follow these instructions if you want to import this aircraft from FS2004 into FSX:

    Instructions for the freeware version:

    1. Copy the folder "SMS_MD11_V2" (located in the aircraft folder of FS2004 e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\ ) to the Airplanes folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\ ).

    2. Copy the files "737-400.gau", "Boeing747-400.cab", and "papmd11_v2.CAB" from the main gauges folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Gauges\) to the main gauges folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Gauges\).

Next time when you start FSX, the aircraft should be visible in the aircraft selection list and work fine. If you like to see a thumbnail image for each livery, you need to make a screenshot of each livery of the aircraft and resize it to 256x128 pixels (use an image editor like photoshop, paintshop or whatever you prefer). Make sure the image format is JPG and name each of them "thumbnail.jpg". Then copy the image to each texture folder inside the aircraft folder (e.g. \SMS_MD11_V2\texture\ ).

The virtual cockpit doesn't work in FSX. Also, I think you should judge freeware and other works from Simviation.com. Some self made MD-11F, B777 and B767 are there. I think you should judge that too.
