iFly 747-400

review

The Boeing 747 is a long-range, wide body commercial passenger jet aircraft. The Boeing 747-400 was launched in 1985 and entered service in 1989. The -400 version introduced improvements like winglets, tail fuel tanks, new more powerful and fuel efficient engines, new interior, and new glass cockpit with six large CRT displays. The stretched upper deck that was introduced with the -300 version was standard for the passenger and combi variants, while the new cargo version kept the smaller upper deck, which was useless in freighter configuration as no cargo is placed on this deck.

One thing is clear, this Boeing 747-400 package contains the most advanced panel and virtual cockpit of all freeware 747s. The exterior model is also very detailed, but the shape of the nose is a bit weird. There is only one model variant modeled: the passenger version with General Electric (GE) engines. In the interest of frame rate, you can choose between the no virtual cockpit model, the virtual cockpit model and the virtual cockpit + virtual cabin model.

The 2d panel looks very realistic and many systems (fuel system, IRS, TCAS, FMC, etc) are simulated. Those systems are also accessible in the virtual cockpit mode. It is possible to input or load a flight plan and ute a full cat.3 ILS auto landing. Although the aircraft generates too much lift, the flight dynamics seem to be accurate. The package contains a few liveries which are quite good in quality, but more liveries are available on website like AVSIM.

I would rate it the best freeware aircraft ever, were it not too slow for my system. The programming might lack, I'm no expert, but the truth remains that this aircraft has a MASSIVE, and I mean MASSIVE impact on framerates.

For people with high-end systems - GET IT!
For people with low-end systems - Nope.
