FSFrance Concorde

review

The Concorde was a supersonic passenger airliner developed by Arospatiale and British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). Although the Concorde was not the first supersonic passenger airliner, it was the more successful of the only two supersonic airliners to have ever operated commercially, the Russian Tupolev Tu-144 being the other. Despite the excellent safely record, the Concorde operations ceased 24 October 2003 due to low passenger numbers following the type's only crash (on 25 July 2000). Also, the slump in air travel following the September 11 attacks and rising maintenance costs made the retirement of the Concorde unavoidable.

FsFrance developed a freeware Concorde for FS2004. FsFrance closed their doors in 2007 due to conflicts with people who made their products available for download under their own name. This happens all the time to all freeware developers, but it seems that it was reason enough to stop for FsFrance. Nevertheless, their Concorde is still available here and there, so we did not want to exclude it from the aircraft reviews section.

This Concorde model looks nice and comes with panel, virtual cockpit and passenger cabin, sounds and liveries of Air France (new colors) and British Airways (old colors). The panel is quite simple and the functionality is very limited. So don't expect a realistic Concorde experience, like with the payware alternatives. However, the panel is equipped with TCAS and everything seems to work fine. The virtual cockpit is very basic and doesn't offer much functionality. The whole passenger cabin is modeled, including the wings. All animations seem to work properly, except the main landing gear. It is floating a few feet above the ground on takeoff or touchdown, like there is an invisible surface above the runway. The flight dynamics are quite unrealistic, it's very easy to climb to FL550 and speed up to mach 2. Just climb and you'll get there in no time. And you might want to decrease the sound volume a bit, cause the 'sonic boom' is quite loud!

A FSX version is also released later by a 3rd party developer.

This Concorde is compatible with FS2004 and older FSX versions. FSX SP2/Acceleration might cause some problems, like the back cockpit windows as mentioned. FS2002 compatibility has not been tested.

Perhaps the aircraft is too heavy? Also, make sure that the nose is in down position on takeoff.
