Kirill Konovalov Il-96

review

The Ilyushin Il-96 is a long range wide-body jet airliner produced by the Ilyushin design bureau. The Il-96 is based on the Il-86, but shorter and equipped with more advanced technology such as powerful Aviadvigatel PS-90 two-shaft turbofan engines, supercritical wings fitted with winglets, a glass cockpit, and a fly-by-wire control system. The development of the Il-96 started in mid-80s. The first flight of the prototype took place on 28 September 1988. The first production Il-96 entered service with Aeroflot Russian International Airlines in 1993. There are three main variants: the Il-96-300, Il-96M/T and Il-96-400. The Il-96M is a stretched (10 m / 30 ft) variant of the Il-96-300 with Western-style avionics and is powered by Pratt & Whitney PW2337 engines. The Il-96-400 is identical to the 96M, but equipped with Russian avionics and Aviadvigatel PS90-A1 turbofans.

Kirill Konovalov developed a nice representation of the Ilyushin Il-96-300 ,-400 and 96M for FS2004. The exterior looks good, as do the liveries. Sometimes the liveries load very blurry for some reason. If that happens, zoom in very close, then the livery textures will load right. The panel and virtual cockpit are very simple. Only the most basic systems are simulated. The autopilot works ok, but beware, Russian values are used. You have to check the values of the popups to see the western values of altitude and speed. This can also be seen on the PFD. The 96M comes with a very different panel, its a slightly modified iFLY B747-400 panel. This is of course not realistic at all, but it offers much more functionality than the simple panel of the 96-300 and 96-400 versions.

All usual animations are there, including a moving stair when the main door is openend (SHIFT + E). The animation of the main landing gear is not exactly right with sometimes a bit sinking and floating wheels. Forget about strong crosswind situations on takeoff/landing, because the rudder effect on the ground is very limited. The engine sounds are not bad, especially the interior sounds. No wings are modeled in the virtual cockpit and the wings are not flexible. Perhaps this will be added in the future, since the models are still under development.

    Installation instructions FS2004

    Since there are many versions and updates available for these aircraft, it is not simple to know which one to install first etc. For that reason, we've written some instructions divided in steps from 1-9. If followed correctly, you should have the Il-96-300, -400 and 96M fully working including engine sounds. In these instructions, it is assumed that you use Windows XP and the default C: disk installation of FS2004.

    1. Download "il-96-400-il-96-300.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Go to the temp. folder and copy the contents of the folder "Aircraft(FS9)SimObjects-Airplanes(FSX)" to the aircraft folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\ ).

    2. Still in the temp. folder, copy the contents of the "Gauges" folder to the main gauges folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Gauges\ ).

    3. Download "project_il-96_il-96-300v3.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Go to the temp. folder and copy the folders "model.V3", "model.V3p", "texture.President" and "texture.russia1" to the "Ilyushin Il-96-300" folder inside the aircraft folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\Ilyushin Il-96-300\ ).

    4. Still in the temp. folder, open the file "Add to Aircraft.cfg.txt" with notepad. Copy all text to the clipboard. Then, go to the "Ilyushin Il-96-300" folder inside the aircraft folder of FS2004 and open the file "aircraft.cfg" with notepad. Paste the text that you've copied to the clipboard inside this file, below the first [fltsim] entry. That's between "description=Test Dynamics for 96-300" and "[General]". Now we have to edit a few things.

    a. Change "[fltsim.x]" to "[fltsim.1]" and change "[fltsim.x+1]" to "[fltsim.2]".
    b. Change "sim=96M" to "sim=96-300" for each entry ([fltsim.1] and [fltsim.2]).
    c. Remove the number "2" behind each "panel=".

    The three [fltsim] entries should now look like this:

    [fltsim.0]
    title=Ilyusin Il-96-300 VC Aeroflot
    sim=96-300
    model=300
    panel=
    sound=
    texture=Aeroflot
    kb_checklists=
    kb_reference=
    atc_id=96010
    atc_airline=
    atc_flight_number=96010
    atc_heavy=1
    ui_manufacturer=Ilyushin
    ui_type=Il-96-300
    ui_variation=Aeroflot
    description=Test Dynamics for 96-300

    [fltsim.1]
    title=Ilyusin Il-96-300 VC State Transport Company Russia
    sim=96-300
    model=V3
    panel=
    sound=
    texture=Russia1
    kb_checklists=
    kb_reference=
    atc_id=96018
    atc_airline=
    atc_flight_number=96018

    ui_manufacturer=Ilyushin
    ui_type=Il-96-300
    ui_variation=Russia
    description=Test Dynamics for 96-300

    [fltsim.2]
    title=Ilyusin Il-96-300 VC State Transport Company Russia President
    sim=96-300
    model=V3p
    panel=
    sound=
    texture=President
    kb_checklists=

    atc_id=96012
    atc_airline=
    atc_flight_number=96012
    atc_heavy=1
    ui_manufacturer=Ilyushin
    ui_type=Il-96-300
    ui_variation=Russia President
    description=Test Dynamics for 96-300

    5. Download "ilyushin_il-96m.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Now create a new folder inside the main aircraft folder of FS2004. Name it "Ilyushin Il-96M". Go to the temp. folder and copy the contents to the newly created folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\Ilyushin Il-96M\ ).

    6. Download "il-96m_v.0.8_install.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Go to the temp. folder and run the installer (IL-96M v.0.8 install.exe).

    7. Download "ilyushin_il-96m_v.0.8_to_v.0.9.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Go to the temp. folder and run the installer (IL-96M v.0.8 to v.0.9 install.exe).

    8. Download "project_96_v.0.8.5.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Go to the temp. folder and copy the contents of the folder "96-400" to the "Ilyushin Il-96-400" folder inside the aircraft folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\Ilyushin Il-96-400\). Then, open the file "aircraft.cfg" inside the "Ilyushin Il-96-400" folder which is inside the aircraft folder of FS2004. Change "sim=96M" to "sim=96-400". The [fltsim.0] section should look like this now:

    [fltsim.0]
    title=Ilyusin Il-96-400 Aeroflot VC
    sim=96-400
    model=V2
    panel=
    sound=
    texture=Aeroflot
    kb_checklists=
    kb_reference=
    atc_id=RA-96110
    atc_airline=Aeroflot
    atc_flight_number=96110
    atc_heavy=1
    ui_manufacturer=Ilyushin
    ui_type=Il-96-400
    ui_variation=Aeroflot VC
    description=Test Dynamics for 96-400 & 96M

    Again, go to the temp. folder and copy the contents of the folder "96M" to the "Ilyushin Il-96M" folder inside the aircraft folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\Ilyushin Il-96M\). Do NOT the same with the 96-300, since that version is already updated to V3. Just ignore the V2 files for the -300 version.

    9. Go to the sound folder of the Ilyushin Il-96-400 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\Ilyushin Il-96-400\Sound\) and open the file "sound.cfg". Change:

    [fltsim]
    alias=fsfsconv\747-sound

    to:

    [fltsim]
    alias=Ilyushin Il-96M\sound

    Do the same with the sound.cfg file of the Ilyushin Il-96-300 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\Ilyushin Il-96-300\Sound\).

    Installation instructions FSX

    These instructions are different from the FS2004 instructions. The later updates include gauges that are not compatible with FSX, so we don't need them. In these instructions, it is assumed that you use Windows XP and the default C: disk installation of FSX.

    Note that the main landing gear and gear doors might not animate properly in FSX.

    1. Download "il-96-400-il-96-300.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Go to the temp. folder and copy the contents of the folder "Aircraft(FS9)SimObjects-Airplanes(FSX)" to the aircraft folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\ ).

    2. Still in the temp. folder, copy the contents of the "Gauges" folder to the main gauges folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Gauges\ ).

    3. Download "project_il-96_il-96-300v3.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Go to the temp. folder and copy the folders "model.V3", "model.V3p", "texture.President" and "texture.russia1" to the "Ilyushin Il-96-300" folder inside the aircraft folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\Ilyushin Il-96-300\ ).

    4. Still in the temp. folder, open the file "Add to Aircraft.cfg.txt" with notepad. Copy all text to the clipboard. Then, go to the "Ilyushin Il-96-300" folder inside the aircraft folder of FSX and open the file "aircraft.cfg" with notepad.

    [fltsim.0]
    title=Ilyusin Il-96-300 VC Aeroflot
    sim=96-300

    5. Download "ilyushin_il-96m.zip" and unzip to a temp. folder. Now create a new folder inside the aircraft folder of FSX. Name it "Ilyushin Il-96M". Go to the temp. folder and copy the contents to the newly created folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\Ilyushin Il-96M\ ).

    6. Go to the sound folder of the Ilyushin Il-96-300 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\Ilyushin Il-96-300\Sound\) and open the file "sound.cfg". Change:

    [fltsim]
    alias=fsfsconv\747-sound

    to:

    [fltsim]
    alias=B737_800\sound

    Do the same with the sound.cfg file of the Ilyushin Il-96-400 and 96M.
